Nepal´s dream of winning the ACC U-16 Elite Cup Cricket title was shattered for second time in a row on Sunday. Nepal was defeated by host Malaysia by one wicket at the Kinrara cricket Ground in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
In the last edition in 2010, Nepal lost to Singapore in the final.
Stunning half century innings from Opener Virandeep Singh guided Malaysia towards the victory. Malaysia successfully chased the target of 118 runs losing nine wickets in 39.1 overs. Earlier, winning the toss Nepal was bowled out for 117 runs in 33 overs.
Man-of-the-match Singh was unbeaten on 54 runs off 119 balls with seven boundaries. Nepali bowlers were successful to remove other opener Nalin de Silva (0) cheaply. Malaysia had lost its first wicket with six runs on the board. Opener Singh and Vinay Singh shared 47-run partnership for the second wicket and made a base for Malaysia.
Vinay Singh scored 22 runs off 44 balls with three boundaries. Malaysia continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and was tottering at 87/8 in 32 overs. Singh and Shankar Sathish shared 20-runs partnership for the eighth wickets to take the team near victory. Sathish scored 12 runs off 11 balls with two boundaries.
Singh scripted Malaysia´s victory with a boundary in the first ball of the last over bowled by Kalicharan Yadav. Three of the Malaysian batsmen were out for a duck while four other batsmen failed to reach double figure.
Akash Bista and Yadhav took two wickets each for Nepal while Jagdish Chand, Dipendra Chand and Sashi Misra shared a wicket each.
Earlier, Nepali openers Dipendra Chand and Nurdhoj Sen could not give sound start for Nepal as they shared 24-run partnership for the first wicket which was the second best partnership for Nepal in the match. Skipper Chand fell in the 4th overs with 21 runs from as many balls with three boundaries.
Sen was trapped LBW on 19 runs off 40 balls with three boundaries. After the fall of Sen, Nepali batsmen continued to lose wickets in regular intervals. Fifth order batsmen Akash Bista was the only set batsmen for Nepal. Bista scored 35 runs off 54 balls that included six boundaries. Sashi Misra scored 14 runs off 17 balls with three boundaries before being run out.
Two of Nepali batsmen were out for a duck while five other batsmen failed to reach the double figure. Shankar Goonasagaran grabbed three wickets in his eight over spell conceding 27 runs. Pavandeep Singh, Sharvin Muniandy and Shankar Satish shared two wickets each.
Aakash Bista was announced player-of-the-tournament while Nurdhoj Sen received best batsman award. Bista scored 109 runs and took 17 wickets in the overlall tournament with the economy rate of 2.48. Sen scored 182 runs with the average of 30.33. Pavandeep Singh of host Malaysia received best bowler award while match winner of the final Virandeep Singh of Malaysia was awarded the most promising player of the tournament.
